High-Rise Insulation Retrofit in Toronto

A 32-storey residential tower in downtown Toronto was underperforming against Ontario's updated energy-efficiency benchmarks. The building envelope — original to the 1970s construction — was losing heat through uninsulated balcony slabs, spandrel panels, and deteriorating window-wall interfaces. CoatNex supplied a closed-cell spray polyurethane foam system that was applied to the interior of the spandrel panels and balcony slab edges during a phased renovation, allowing residents to remain in their units. The CCMC-evaluated foam system achieved R-6.5 per inch, passed CAN/ULC-S705.1 fire testing, and delivered a 42% reduction in whole-building heating energy consumption in the first full winter after completion. Every floor passed first-pass inspection by the city building department.

Pipeline Corrosion Protection in Fort McMurray

A major oilsands operator in the Fort McMurray region needed to recoat 12 kilometres of above-ground piping carrying bitumen-laden process fluids. The existing paint system was failing after just three years due to thermal cycling between -40 °C winters and +35 °C summers, combined with abrasive tailings splash. CoatNex supplied a two-component polyurea coating system with a 15-second gel time, allowing application in ambient temperatures as low as -20 °C without heated enclosures. The plural-component spray system was applied at 60-80 mils DFT directly over abrasive-blasted steel. The polyurea system provides an expected service life exceeding 10x that of the previous paint system, dramatically reducing the operator's maintenance coating budget and HSE exposure from scaffolding and confined-space work.

What Our Partners Say

CoatNex made our CCMC compliance process seamless. Their technical team provided all the evaluation documentation we needed, and the foam system performed flawlessly through the city inspection process. We've since specified their closed-cell SPF on every high-rise retrofit in our pipeline.

Working in the oil sands, we can't afford coating failures — the cost of re-mobilizing a crew to a remote site is enormous. The CoatNex polyurea system gave us a 15-second gel time at -20 °C, which meant we could coat through the shoulder season without heated enclosures. That alone saved us six figures on the project.

Their PU flooring system for our food processing plant in Saguenay withstood daily washdowns and thermal shock from day one. It passed the CFIA inspection on the first attempt, and three years later it still looks brand new.
